A Great Day At Acro
by carl on May.24, 2010, under Acro Yoga, Body Health, teaching, Yoga
I had the most wonderful day, in terms of proficiency, at acro-yoga last Friday. I’m still floating on the clouds of accomplishment (yes, I know that isn’t the point, but still, it feels nice, for a while) that came with just about everything I tried to do. My dropbacks into backbend were excellent, my standups were improving, and my handstands were strong and controlled. When your teacher, who is normally sparse with compliments and effusiveness, gives you a look of surprise and amazement and remarks on your achievements afterwards, that really means a lot. Not all days are like this; far from it, and the ironic thing is, I’m still nursing a rotator cuff problem in my right shoulder. It was so severe last Monday that I almost didn’t practice. Acro is cancelled for this week, so it will be a good time to rest take it easy, and do a little more cardio and other counter exercises to yoga.
Teaching notes: my Sunday class has grown quite a bit, slowly and gradually, over the last few months. It now averages, I’d guess, about 20 people or more. Very interesting to watch it grow; I do recall the trepidation I had when I took it over last year. Seems that my mind was, let’s say, not accurate in its perceptions. I”m also considering starting to ramp it up a little in terms of difficulty, since I have a core group who has been quite regular in attendance and their abilities are improving.

Glad your acro yoga went well, meant to ask you about that. Also, you should definitely ramp up your Sunday class. It was almost too easy.

Very nice to have feedback. Sounds like this is a subject I should cogitate more on. Bhujapidasana, anyone? Oh, and I’d recommend Meg’s class at Hill Country Village Spectrum, Thursdays, 10:00-11:15 a.m.

Great recommendation Carl! I enjoyed Meg’s class this morning. And I got to see one of my favorite teachers there too:)
Also, I think that bhudjapidasana would be a great pose to incorporate into one of your upcoming yoga classes. You might as well have your students move into tittibhasana from there.

I’ve done the sequence in class, every once in awhile, starting with bhujapidasana, into titibbhasana–out and then into kurmasana, suptakurmasana and tittibhasana again. It’s an extremely difficult sequence of poses, and I’m usually the only one left doing it. Takes a lot of arm and bandha strength to come back into chaturanga from tittibhasana. My Sunday class is probably the most ready for more repetitions of this. Glad you enjoyed Meg’s class; it’s interesting how hard one can work without too much sweating. i think it should be called “yoga-intensive” instead of power yoga.

Sorry that this comment is sooo not related to this post but I have a question that you might know the answer to. You have recommended Kathy’s class to me on several occasions. The one that is at HCV every other Saturday. Do you happen to know if she is teaching tomorrow? I called the gym and they have no idea and apparently have no way of finding out for me either. Just thought I’d ask you. No biggie if you don’t know. Thank you.

Funny you should ask…I did inquire at my last night’s class, and as it turns out, tomorrow is not Kathy’s turn at HCV. There really should be a better way to find out who’s teaching these alternating classes, other than asking the regular members. If you decide to try the vinyasa class at Yoga Shala, let me know.

Thanks for the info. I guess I will go to Kathy’s class another time. I do plan on trying the class at Yoga Shala soon, but not tomorrow. I don’t think my body can last through a two hour Vinyasa class(since you are recommending it, I am sure it is not easy!). I think I have practiced yoga everyday for the past two weeks and I am really feeling it today. Is there such a thing as too much yoga???Are you teaching on Sunday or is that class cancelled due to the “holiday”?
